Biography

Douglas A. Wood (1930 – 2023)- Art Educator & Artist 

Douglas Wood was an Honours Graduate in Fine Art at the University of Durham in the UK. He studied painting at the King Edward VII School of Art in Newcastle upon Tyne where his teachers were Sir Lawrence Gowing and Roger de Grey PRA.

He began exhibiting at the Laing Art Gallery in the 1950s, before also having his work shown at the Westgate and Univision Galleries in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

For over two decades he was involved in Tertiary Art Education and the training of art teachers in Britain, and he was also a contributor to international art education conferences and seminars in Canada and Australia during the 70's and early 80's. He is the author of several papers exploring theory and practice in visual arts education which were published in Britain, Canada and Australia.​​​​

Formerly Head of the Department of Art at Whitelands College, London, and Chairman of the Combined Arts at the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education, he was additionally a regular exhibitor in London. His work was shown in the Royal Academy of Arts (1982), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) and the New English Art Club (NEAC) at the Mall Galleries (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986,) the Barbican Centre (1986) and the Bloomsbury Gallery, University of London (1986). He held a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Dixon Gallery in the University of London Arts Centre in 1985. 

​He was an appointed examiner in art for courses at degree level which were validated by the University of London and by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). He was further involved in examining art for the Associated Examining Board (AEB) at 'O' and 'A' levels for centres in England and Wales. â€‹

He migrated to Western Australia in 1987. His paintings have been shown in Fremantle Moores Gallery, New Collectables Gallery), Perth (Greenhill Galleries), Albany, and Katanning. He was the recipient of several Western Australian art awards which have included the City of Belmont Art Prize (1989), the City of Melville Art Prize (1989 and 1990), the R & I Bank Test Match Art Prize (1991) and the major purchase prize in the Inaugural Telecom Art Award (1992).

His paintings and drawings have been acquired by public and private collectors in Britain and Australia. He was listed in the 1991 edition of "Who's Who of Australian Visual Artists" which is published by D. W. Thorpe (Melbourne) in collaboration with the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA).
